Tigress

A Warrior Queen at Tamworth Castle
I Am Tamworth. I Am Dance.

Tigress is a modern retelling of the story of one of the greatest female figures in English history, the formidable Saxon warrior queen Æthelflæda. Combining breath-taking dance and acrobatics with a searing original score, this outdoor large-scale performance took place against the dramatic backdrop of Tamworth Castle.

Motionhouse’s characteristic athletic and energetic style was used to create a thrilling spectacle with more than 200 participants from Tamworth, supported by local drumming groups and choirs.

Following the death of her husband the king, Tigress sees the formidable Lady of the Mercians shoulder the responsibility of commanding her army against the invading Vikings whilst bringing up her daughter Aelfwyn. In a fierce fight for their lives, the Mercians use their strength and tenacity to survive, as dancers lead the spectacle to an exhilarating climax.

Tigress has been developed as part of the ‘I Am Tamworth’ initiative by internationally acclaimed midlands-based dance company Motionhouse. The ‘I Am Tamworth’ project aims to encourage people in Tamworth to engage with or become involved in the arts. Featuring Tamworth Dance Company, Belgrave Taiko Drumming, the Amington Band, the Male Voice choir, Tamworth Voices and the Ladies Voice Choir, this unique event will capture the warrior Queens electrifying spirit as never before.

Æthelflæda is of special significance to Tamworth, having founded the castle and the town in Saxon times and led the Mercians to victory against the Vikings. She is also a significant figure in the history of England: the daughter of Alfred the great, she effectively ruled Mercia after her husband’s death. Her reputation as a formidable warrior queen and an influential female figure make her place in the history of England an important one.

“What excited me about this project at first was the story of Æthelflæda and her incredible achievements: as a leader, as a woman and as a mother. Working with so many talented community groups in such an historical, heritage-rich location is a real privilege. The whole team at Motionhouse is really delighted to be part of this unique and inspiring project.”
