Wondrous Wednesday – 99 days and counting!

A sneak-peek into how we made the Wondrous Stories show image...

8th December 2021

It’s another Wondrous Wednesday; our blog dedicated to Wondrous Stories! Conceived and directed by our Artistic Director Kevin Finnan, this extraordinary large-scale production will be the opening show of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

Yesterday (Tuesday 7th December), we gave people in Birmingham and the region a sneak-peek into just one of the spectacular moments in Wondrous Stories as we revealed the show image to mark 100 days to go until opening night! The show will be packed full of visual magic and spectacular aerial moments.

The image reveals a group of characters jumping and tumbling out of a giant book as it flies across the night sky above Centenary Square and the iconic Library of Birmingham, and also gives you a flavour of what to expect from this incredible show. Take a look below!

In early November, our fantastic photographer Dan Tucker joined us in our creation space at the Town Hall in Leamington Spa to capture photos of the characters for the image.

Under the direction of Kevin, our performers really did tumble, jump and fall off a 3 metre high block to get the perfect shots for the image! Watch the video below for a sneak-peek at how they did it.

It was fantastic to have the opportunity to include our guest performers Freewheelin’ Dance in the image too! The shot of group member Daisy (and former member of our own Motionhouse Youth) who features in the image was taken at the Freewheelin’ Dance rehearsals in Birmingham.
