Being a part of 5G Creative Coventry

21st October 2022

The 5G Creative Coventry project has been a fantastic experience. We’ve learned so much about what opportunities this transformative technology will bring.

It’s been great to learn about the software that’s available. This has enabled us to come up with an idea for a simple augmented reality game for children to play when they come to see our new children’s show Starchitects, which goes on tour at the end of October. Children who come to see the show can play the game where they find and name the planets in the solar system using a phone or a tablet. We’re just ironing out the final technical challenges we’ve had in creating it.

Ashley Brown from the project has helped us with some of the more complex elements of the game but overall, it’s something we’ve been able to make ourselves and we hope that we will be able to offer it to audiences very soon!

In this way, the project has had a very tangible effect on how we can engage with our young audiences who come and see Starchitects. We hope they will find it a fun and educational thing to do and that it will be a means for them to engage with more deeply with our work.

We came into the project with an idea about using 5G to share the performance of one of our outdoor shows from different perspectives e.g. using a 360 camera from inside a performance or a gopro strapped to one of our dancers to give audiences a dancer’s perspective. As 5G networks are not really up and running yet, and many people don’t yet have 5G devices, this is something that we have put on the back burner and are going to do once 5G is readily available in the public domain. We are hoping to try it out next year, if 5G is rolled out by then.
