Hi, I’m Molly and I am on placement here with Motionhouse (very exciting)!
Recently, I attended the Coventry & Warwickshire Teacher Networks event for dance teachers. Motionhouse and Ascension Dance presented a Teacher’s Workshop, exploring how teachers can encourage secondary school pupils to consider a career in the arts.
Working with teachers from the Secondary Dance Teacher Network, we took part in interactive activities, and Hannah (Creative Learning Manager – Motionhouse), AJ (Company Director – Ascension Dance) and Tom (Programme Coordinator – Motionhouse) shared their career journeys – proving that there are so many careers in dance alone and many ways to get there.
Hannah led us in an activity where we had to match the job to its description, teaching us about job titles and their roles in teams such as ‘Programme Co-ordinator’, ‘Programme Producer’ (yes, there is a difference) ‘Development Director’ and ‘Communications Director’.
It was incredibly eye-opening – there are so many careers in the Arts! There are some that even now I’m at Uni I was not fully aware of, let alone in secondary school.
This needs to change! If a wider range of pupils were aware that there are arts jobs, outside of performing, available to them, it could transform the way the Arts is looked at in schools.
