Carrying on our series of blogs about things that we’re proud of or grateful for in our 35th birthday year, today we’re celebrating Wondrous Stories, the opening show of the Birmingham 2022 Festival. We started the creation period for Wondrous Stories two years ago this week, spending six-months from October 2021 to March 2022 working alongside our producing partners Outdoor Places Unusual Spaces (OPUS), a group of brilliant artists and organisations from across the region, and our 250-strong integrated community cast, to create this free outdoor production.
From 17-20 March 2022, we turned Centenary Square into the stage for Wondrous Stories, reaching 22,000 people from all across the city and the region free of charge over four nights. It was a real celebration of community and togetherness. A huge thank you and a massive shout out to every single person who was part of the Wondrous Stories adventure with us.
We were incredibly proud and honoured in January 2023, when Wondrous Stories won the prestigious Access All Areas award in the Diversity and Inclusion category. Access All Areas supports and showcases the power, creativity and successes of the outdoor and live events industry. Wondrous Stories was recognised for its inclusive practices not only on stage, but behind the scenes and for audiences.
Wondrous Stories will remain in our hearts for a very long time. What a privilege it was to be asked to create the show and to make and perform it with such an amazing group of people. That’s really something to be grateful for.
