Reimagine, reuse, recycle

24th October 2023

For this week’s blog, we’re featuring our work to reimagine, repurpose and reuse our sets as part of our Environmental Action Plan. This is a key element of our aim to reduce our impact on the environment – our sets are the largest item across all of our activities, so maximising their lifespan can make a significant difference to the amount of resources we are using.

A perfect example of this approach is the set we are using to create our Christmas production for families, Starchitects Save Santa!, which will be in residence at Midlands Arts Centre Birmingham from 17 November to 30 December 2023 (book your tickets now if you haven’t already, they’re selling fast!) The set for Starchitects Save Santa, is now on it’s third ‘reimagine and reuse’ cycle, with Starchitects Save Santa! being the most recent production it has been used for. It was originally created for our 2013 production Broken, which toured until 2016, then reused in 2019/20 to create our children’s show Starchitects for a residency at Bluestone Wales and subsequent touring.

We have also reused the set from our 2013 outdoor production Captive in our 2015 commission Fragile, and the blocks from BLOCK, our 2015 collaboration with NoFit State Circus, have been reused in HENGE, and in our performance with Raye at the National Lottery’s New Year’s Eve Big Bash on ITV in 2022. We also use both the Captive cage and the blocks in many of our professional and youth training activities.
